komunikasi saat ini tidak hanya terjadi secara tatap muka saja namun juga dilakukan dengan jarak jauh. Berkomunikasi tanpa dibatasi jarak adalah suatu revolusi dibidang komunikasi yang dapat manusia nikmati, salah satu inovasi yang dapat mempermudah proses komunikasi tersebut adalah melalui telepon seluler, atau yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan handphone, kecanggihan yang terdapat pada hanphone sendiri kini telah berkembang pesat yang dulunya hanya menyediakan fitur telfon dan sms saja tapi kini telah berkembang menjadi smartphone yang memiliki kecanggihan, salah satunya perkembangan aplikasi berbasis online seperti Line, Facebook, Instagram dan lain-lain.

Salah satu aplikasi yang banyak diminati seluruh kalangan masyarakat Indonesia yaitu aplikasi WhatssApp.

Penggunaan whatsApp sebagai media online dalam dunia pendidikan semakin tahun semakin meningkat seiring dengan meningkatnya kebutuhan dosen dan mahasiswa untuk saling berinteraksi dengan dosen, seseorang atau sekelompok orang yang berjarak secara fisik. WhatsApp tersedia pada smartphone yang digunakan sebagai media komunikasi. Adapun aplikasi whatsapp dapat diunduh secara gratis melalui playstore.

Menggunakan whatsApp yang sudah terhubung dengan koneksi internet, maka mahasiswa dengan mudah berkomunikasi nonstop yang memungkinkan untuk saling berkirim pesan teks, gambar hingga video.

Aplikasi WhatsApp ini merupakan satu aplikasi pesanan ringkas berasaskan internet yang diperkenalkan pada 24 Februari tahun 2009 oleh dua orang bekas pekerja Yahoo Inc. yaitu Brian Acton dan Jan Koum. Acton dan Koum telah membangunkan aplikasi karena menyadari bahwa aplikasi WhatsApp merupakan aplikasi yang mampu untuk menjadi medium manusia masa kini. WhatsApp telah berfungsi selama hampir 14 tahun, Pemanfaatan whatsApp memudahkan dosen untuk mengontrol kegiatan belajar mahasiswa di luar jam mengajar.

Pemanfaatan whatsApp memang harus dilakukan di era globalisasi sekarang ini karena pada dasarnya aplikasi whatsApp memang bertujuan untuk membantu atau mempermudah kegiatan manusia. Jadi, dengan memanfaatkan aplikasi whatsApp sangat membantu dalam kegiatan komunikasi antar mahasiswa dengan dosen, maupun sebaliknya. hal yang penting pada aplikasi whatsApp ini diantara pengguna aplikasi ini akan mendapatkan pengaruh proses komunikasi.

Mahasiswa tidak hanya memanfaatkan whatsApp untuk sarana komunikasi dengan teman saja tetapi dengan adanya aplikasi whatsApp mahasiswa dapat mengikuti perkuliahan online yang di laksanakan oleh dosen. Komunikasi secara langsung dengan seseorang yang disegani sebagaimana halnya dosen bagi mahasiswa bukanlah hal yang mudah. Kondisi ini membuat mahasiswa lebih memilih komunikasi melalui media online salah satunya menggunakan media komunikasi menggunakan WhatsApp untuk berkomunikasi kepada dosen, karna whatsApp memiliki pengaruh yang besar terhadap penunjang kegiatan belajar dan mengajar di dunia perkuliahan.
