Berdasarkan keputusan presiden RI Nomor 24 Tahun 2008, Peringatan hari menanam pohon Indonesia sebagai upaya untuk memulihkan kerusakan hutan dan lahan. Selain itu juga untuk menumbuhkan kesadaran kepada masyarakat mengenai pentingnya menanam pohon. Keputusan tersebut sekaligus menjadi amanat kepada seluruh masyarakat Indonesia untuk minimal menanam satu pohon atau yang dikenal dengan istilah “One Man One Tree”.
Maka dari itu, melalui momentum peringatan hari menanam pohon yang diperingati setiap tahun ini, diharapkan dapat menyadarkan masyarakat akan pentingnya keberadaan pohon. Karena jika terjadinya banjir, kekeringan, tanah longsor, perubahan iklim tak lepas dari kondisi hutan yang tidak baik karena pembalakan liar, pengurangan kawasan hutan, degradasi hutan dan lahan. Oleh karena itu, untuk memulihkan kondisi hutan dan lahan dilakukan rehabilitasi hutan dan lahan yang rusak melalui kegiatan menanam baik melalui gerakan menanam secara massal oleh masyarakat luas sebagai bentuk kesadaran dan kepedulian terhadap upaya pemulihan kerusakan sumber daya hutan dan lahan. Terkait hari menanam pohon Indonesia sejumlah taman dan hutan yang bertujuan untuk wisata, meningkatkan ruang terbuka hijau, mengurangi banjir, mengatasi polusi dan sebagainya. Contoh sederhana manfaat dari kehadiran pohon yang masyarakat dapat rasakan yaitu sebagai tempat berteduh dikala cuaca sedang panas.
Kementerian Pertanian pada tahun 2016 melansir, HMPI (Hari Menanam Pohon Indonesia) erat kaitannya dengan andil Indonesia dalam mengendalikan perubahan iklim. Langkah mitigasi dengan penanaman pohon merupakan salah satu upaya mengurangi emisi karbon. Terbaru, (14/9/2020) polisi menetapkan 138 orang sebagai tersangka dalam tindak pidana kebakaran hutan dan lahan (Karhutla). Kasus terbanyak adalah yang terjadi di Riau. Dalam kasus ini, total areal lahan yang telah terbakar seluas 532,032 hektare. Menteri Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (LHK) Siti Nurbaya Bakar menyebut kasus kebakaran hutan dan lahan (Karhutla) menurun tahun ini. Ia menyebutkan bahwa sepanjang 2020, kasus karhutla di tanah air hanya seluas 64,602 hektare turun disbandingkan periode sebelumnya yakni 170.000 hektare. Namun, angka itu bukankah masih tergolong luas jika kita melihat peran hutan yang sangat vital bagi keberlangsungan ekosistem kehidupan makhluk hidup? Ya, memang masih tergolong luas, tapi paling tidak ada penurunan dari tahun lalu ke tahun ini.
Dilansir dari tirto.id secara global, Indonesia menempati posisi kelima terkait dengan negara – negara dengan kehilangan tutupan pohon terbesar. Sejak 2001 – 2014, Global Forest Watch mencatat Indonesia telah kehilangan 18,91 juta Ha hutan. Pada periode yang sama, Rusia menempati posisi teratas kehilangan 42,13 juta ha hutan, dan disusul oleh Brasil yang kehilangan 38,77 ha. Padahal, pohon memiliki banyak manfaat bagi makhluk hidup termasuk manusia.
